Lost progress recovery

• Oct 13, 2023 - 13:58

I was working on a file for a long time yesterday, and when I opened it this morning, it looked like almost all of what I did yesterday was not there. The last thing I did before I was done was hit save, after which it did its uploading/exporting audio thing that it does, then I closed it.

For information, I have windows 11 and MuseScore 4. I have seen other posts about a similar issue, and they mentioned a hidden auto save in the folder where it is saved, but my file was an online save. With that, where might the auto save be? Would it be in documents or app data, or somewhere else? Is the file even saved on your pc at all if you are using cloud save? If this is the case, I will make sure not to use that in the future, but that was the default when I opened it so I hadn’t bothered making an offline save.

These are the places where the files could be:
C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore4
C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore4\cloud_scores
C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore4\cloud_scores\.mscbackup
C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\Documents\MuseScore4\Scores
C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\Documents\MuseScore4\Scores\.mscbackup
C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\Documents\MuseScore4\Cloud_Scores

AppData and .mscbackup can be hidden folders. Therefore, you need to make them visible in Windows Explorer.
The files in AppData may have cryptic names, those in .mscbackup may have a modified file extension that needs to be changed.

For the future: always save a copy on the local hard disk.

It appears the version I’m looking for is not there. There was nothing in documents. In app data there was only a version from earlier in the night and from this morning. Perhaps when I opened it this morning to look over it it was saved over. I’ll check more later but I’ll probably just have to redo it. I’ll be more careful in the future.

I'm Having a similar issue, if I let Musescore 4 sit open for too long, it wont play audio. I closed the application and a pop up showed up to save my progress. I Click Save and the application closes. I open The application again and a pop up comes up asking if I want to restore my progress. I click yes and it loads a version from over 3 hours before. I've tried looking for the file and I can't find the version I'm looking for. I'm also on windows 11. Please Help!
