Let Ring for Muse Sounds Guitars does not playback properly

• Dec 19, 2023 - 04:36

When placing a "Let Ring" symbol on a staff that has a Muse Sounds Guitar (e.g. Steel String Picked), the notes don't sustain at all. Using a MIDI sound font (e.g. MS Basic Steel String Guitar), the notes sustain normally. If this is a limitation of the sample library/playback engine, I understand and still really like the work put into this!

I also hit this issue today in Musescore 4.2 - it seems to affect all Muse Sounds - but not the MS Basic set. The 'Let ring' line doesn't seem to affect the Muse Sounds.

As mentioned by OP Let Ring (aka MIDI sustain pedal) is nonfunctional with Muse Sounds in MuseScore 4 and is a known regression. Hopefully development will address that soon.

That said, the TAB Ring plugin is a far better alternative to Let Ring for most guitar styles.

Presently TAB Ring works in MuseScore 3.6 and 3.7 but it won't work in MuseScore 4 until development reinstates the Piano Roll Editor (PRE). Good news on that front is that very recently there's a MuseScore 4 development pull request on the PRE. Fingers crossed. And there's a Piano Roll Editor discussion here on Github

Just so you know, you should be able to open your v4 score in MuseScore 3.7 and try out TAB Ring. Sadly, if you process your score with TAB Ring and save it from 3.7, the effect is lost because MuseScore 4.x discards the Len property that MuseScore adjusts—and that's the opening point made in the linked discussion under General Playback Issues.

The regression has been submitted as an Issue on Github.
