New Guitars Don't Sustain?

• Dec 22, 2023 - 07:07

Forgive me if my post is crude... I've never done this before...

Either I'm missing something or these new samples, which sound great, have been programmed in such a way that a note is immediately muted when the next note comes along. And the "let ring" line doesn't do anything at all, so the only way to make the guitars play right is to tie notes, which looks positively stupid for something like picking patterns or strummed chords.

Please tell me if I'm doing something wrong because I would love for this to be a problem with myself rather than with the new samples. Thanks.

*measure A is how this simple picking pattern should be notated; measure B is how it has to be notated in order for the notes to sustain

You are not doing anything wrong. MS treats guitar playback just like any other instrument, (e.g. a human voice); so a very literal interpretation of durations.
Options:
1) Use the "Let Ring"/"Pedal" line. It's crude for guitar but reasonable.
2) Use hidden tied notes.
3) Use a hidden stave just for playback.
4) Wait for MS4 to be able to support the TAB Ring plugin.

(Let Ring used to work, albeit crudely, in MS3 but you indicate that it doesn't in MS4. I don't have MS4 but maybe someone who does can advise on this.)

I suppose I could use a hidden stave for playback like you suggest.
My previous solution was just to use Harp instead of Guitar, since that sample actually does ring out, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that after this new update...
Hidden stave is a better workaround though. A bit overkill, but it'll get the job done. I'll do that. Thanks!

I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong as well, because no matter what I do--add ties, add a "let ring" line, adding a tenuto line underneath every note, anything--the notes will not sustain past an eighth note. I've tried every one of the sounds in Guitars Vol. 1, and I've got nothing.
