How to notate timpani rolls as trills (with correct playback)

In music from before the 20th century, it is common to see drum and timpani rolls notated as trills. Here is how to make that happen in MuseScore, with correct playback.
  1. Add a trill (word or word plus squiggly line) to the note(s) you want.
Without changing anything, this produces a literal trill, either between one note and another or one percussion sound and an adjacent one.
    For timpani:
  2. Go to the properties panel and set the interval to a diminished second (whatever it’s for).
  3. Hide the accidental.
    For unpitched percussion:
If you are not using muse sounds, the other instructions should work.
  4. Disable playback of the trill.
  5. Add a hidden tremolo/roll.
    ONLY WORKS IN 4.1+
