How do you insert an x rather than a note for spoken word lyrics rather than notation?

Insert notes in the rhythm of the spoken words. Select the notes and open the Properties tab in the upper left. Under Note, change the Notehead type to the "X" (or whatever other notehead you want. You will likely want to also uncheck the Play checkbox, so that the notes do not sound.

[A few moments later] Oh, another way you could do it would be to simply add System Text. This would be to add spoken lyrics that are not particularly rhythmic or over a repeated vamp: for example, an extended talking blues, like Lord Buckley's stuff, or Uneasy Rider by Charlie Daniels.
