Automatic rests

Can automatic rest entries be stopped? I want to add some notes and then put in the rests. Musescore keeps adding the 8th note rest after a note and I don't want it there. Or it will add the ¼ note rest and I'm not ready for that either. I'm a beginner if you haven't gathered that out. Thanks Roy
