MuseScore 4 bugs and issues

• Aug 17, 2024 - 14:39

Ever since i downloaded musescore 4 and the new midi sounds the midi seems to have a mind of its own now. here's a list of problems i've been experiencing since it came out (i use a brand new 2021 MacBook Pro running on MacOS Monterey (version 12.2.1)— i am also up to date with musescore 4):
-after inputting a tempo change, i will often experience lag in one or more instrument
-sometimes deleted notes will sound even after they are visibly gone.
-notes that haven’t even been inputted will play for no apparent reason. Sometimes it is because the same note is being played in a different measure but then it is either carried over or just rearticulated in the next measure.
-notes that are considered “too high” will not be heard, or will sound weak or out of tune even when it is in a reasonable range (for example: MuseScore considers A4 to be too high on cello, but as a cellist I know that we can easily go an octave or two above that. In fact, it is a great range for any experienced player so it should not sound bad)
-wrong rhythms will be played and notes will be early or late, making it very hard to heard how something will sound when played together
-notes are sometimes egregiously out of tune
(it sounds like these two problems are built in to make the midi sound "more realistic" hopefully its just a glitch)
-speeding and slowing the tempo (eg. accels and rits) are extremely choppy and don't happen or start at the right times (i tried moving up the velocity which didn't help)
-tied notes are not played if you start in a place after the note has been written even when the note hasn’t ended. This might be intentional but its a big waste of time if you have any long held notes because you will keep having to go back to where that notes starts to the passage with all the notes playing.
-midi does not sound when computer has been on sleep mode (not a problem with musescore 3)
-dynamics are not as smooth as they used to be (they are inconsistent and the difference between them is too drastic)
- crescendo marks simply do not work anymore. After inputting them they become very small and do not appear for the duration you originally input. I have tried redoing it but it always ends up becoming smaller anyway. I feel like I’m constantly editing slurs back to where I originally input them. This was a problem with Musescore 3 but it got worse with Musescore 4
-it used to automatically put the instrument name at the end of a file when exporting but now it doesn’t, which will make exporting whole orchestra parts very difficult.
-There are also a ton of layout issues that weren’t as bad before. I often will make changes to some layout error and it will revert back.
-there is a significant delay when I press play (it might be a bluetooth problem)
-when I copy notes, any text or tempo changes or important info is not copied (this has always been a problem but I see no reason for this as it makes it especially more difficult to do arrangements)

Another side note: why did you get rid of the feature where the notes playing are visually played on the piano? That was a super helpful feature and I'd love to see it return

I really could not be bothered to read such a dense post dealing with so many topics. But here is some advice

  1. If you have specific problems I suggest you create separate posts for each one. Then individuals who know about the specific problems are more likely to read your post and offer help. If many people try to help by replying to this post on different topics you will end up with many overlapping replies that will be almost impossible for you to keep track of what advice is being offered for which problem.

  2. You do not say which version of Musescore you are using. Many improvements and bug fixes have been made between the initial release and the latest version 4.3.2. Make sure you are using it. More fixes will be coming shortly in v 4.4
