Choosing which staves to show per system

• Oct 5, 2024 - 16:29

It is frequently the case that one needs to pick and choose which empty staves to show on a per system basis. This is usually to fill out a page when there are too many non-empty staves to allow another system on the page but not enough to fill the page from top to bottom margin. Every page can potentially be a different set of empty staves.

I have read the MuseScore 4 handbook, but I don't see the per-system setting. Only staff-level settings. If it exists, where can I find the setting?

You can show all empty staves in a system or none. This option is located at Format / Style / Score / Hide empty staves within systems. This applies throughout a score.

You can set this value to a particular staff, score-wide. Right-click on a measure in the particular staff and choose Staff/Part properties from the context menu. Roughly center at the top is the Hide when empty drop-down to choose whether this staff will display in an empty system or not. This is independent of the Format / Style setting.

Next to that is a checkbox to Do not hide if system is empty which appears to override the Staff/Part properties setting, but not the Format / Style setting. (Not sure about this; I've never used this setting.)

As far as I can tell, there is simply no option to hide Staff A in this system and Staff B in that system.
