Display suddenly using a symbol font

It appears that all system text - in dialogue boxes, on buttons, on the status bar and so on - is now displaying in symbol font resembling Arabic (though it isn't). I haven't consciously changed anything, so it would be good to have some views on what might have happened. The scores are unaffected. Picture attached.
