Protocol for uploading a composition based on someone else's file?

Hi there. I'm wondering if there is a specific protocol for when uploading a file that is based on someone else's community file but updated to and tweaked for another instrument. For example, I downloaded a community file for Take Five prepared for sax and piano. I have tweaked it for two ukes and think it may be of interest to other uke players out there.

I've reviewed the score uploading guidelines, but I'm still unclear if there's something specific to do to recognize that it's someone else's file. Or is that what Section 7. Score Status refers to, where it notes section 2/2 of the upload form (Work of music that this score is based on)?

Or is that just something that as a community we don't really worry about and recognize that people will modify and repost scores to fit their own instruments?

Just to clarify - I'm not refering to attributing who composed the piece, but who actually took the time to generate the Musescore file that I've been modifying for use with my instrument.

Thanks,

JL

Provided that the MuseScore arranger has not obtained copyright on their version then you are free to do whatever you want with it. Obviously you need to attribute the score to the original copyright holder but I would credit the arranger in your score's upload comments and add a link to their version.

I have done this with my scores when they are based on another MuseScorer's arrangement of a non-original piece.

If the other arrangement was an original by the scorer then I ask their permission first. Sometimes they just say, "yes"; other times they want to see my arrangement before it goes public.
