Incorrect inner beaming randomly introduced mid-score for all simple time meters

• Dec 19, 2024 - 01:17

Hello,

I have been working on a very large orchestral work, and I have been combining all of the movements into one file for ease of upload, since the album feature was discontinued. I encountered an issue when copying over the third movement, where I noticed that it started arbitrarily after the second section break (it also still is a problem when deleting the breaks), to break inner beams of groups of four sixteenth notes into subgroups of 2—in any simple meter. While I can use beaming properties to manually correct this one-by-one, the sheer size of the score would be make this extremely time-consuming to do, especially since the source score does not do this improper default beaming. I have also tried to manually change the beaming of the key signature, but it does not change newly introduced default beaming either. I suspect I must have done something to screw up the beaming when I made some manual changes in m. 46 of the source score, written m. 795 in the combined score to better internalize a syncopated rhythm which motivically drives the entire movement, however the problem only precipitated when copying it over.

I have attached two scores:
The source score of the third movement (which has the correct default beaming):

and the combined three movements (which randomly changes to incorrect default beaming at written m. 751):

I have only retained the piccolo part for ease of file access and confidentiality of the unpublished work, as the problem does persist in all parts.

If you need any more details, please let me know, and thank you for your help.

Here's what worked for me (using Windows 11 with Musescore 4.4.4) : Select the time signature (2/4) and then Properties. In that dialog, select "Time Signature Properties". So you'll see three beam groupings: 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32. In that last grouping, there are 16 notes grouped in fours (that's the way I found it when I opened your score). Please regroup them in groups of 8 notes each. So there should be two groups of eight notes, all beamed together. If the beams are broken (into fours as in your case) then select the fifth note in the group of eight, and all the beams will be straight through. I don't know why this is, and if you attempt to put it back the way you had it, it won't work, even if you press the Reset button below the note groups. Seems to be a bug. If this explanation is too unreadable then let me know and I'll try again, but otherwise good luck with it.
