Transposing Instrument - Order of doing things
Has Musescore4 changed transposing or am I mixed up. ??
Example.... New Score, Key D Major, No transposing set for instrument on staff settings.
I key in a few bars of notes of the tune and all plays OK in D major.
If I want it to read in Bb when concert pitch is clicked and read in Dmajor when concert pitch is not clicked
What do I do...??
To me Dmajor to Bb is down a Major 3rd so I should set staff properties to transpose down 4 a Major Third.
but I get 2 sharps D major when concert pitch is clicked and 6 sharps F major when concert pitch not clicked.
I was expecting getting Bb in concert sounding pitch and still Dmajor in my written score....
thanks for any help

Sorry, but just realised I should have transposed staff a Major 3rd UP...... This gives me D major when concert sounding is clicked and Bb score when concert is not clicked....... and it still sounds and looks like in D major...
The Bb score looks OK in Bb all notes moved and key sig moved correct......... so am I still doing something wrong...??
No, MuseScore 4 handles transposing instruments the same as it always has. Nonetheless, I always have to figure it out again any time I have to (want to) write for them.
The piccolo can be a C instrument (non-transposing), or an Eb, or a Db transposing instrument. The flute is a C instrument. Clarinets come in Bb, Eb, D, C, A, and G. The Horn comes in just about any key you want. Cornets and trumpets are Bb instruments. Trombone is a C instrument. Tuba and Sousaphone most commonly come in C, F, and Bb.
Piano is, of course, a non-transposing instrument.
Create a score with a piano, and several other instruments in C, Bb, Eb, F. Turn Concert Pitch on and off and see how their displayed keys change. Once you see which instrument transposes as you want it to, look at its transposition and set your instrument to the same setting.
I think you are talking about an Eb instrument, but I'm not sure.
When I'm composing for a mix of instruments, I usually just turn Concert Pitch off and transpose in "sounding" pitch. (Ain't no way I'm going to get the chords right when transposing in my head! :-D ) Then turn Concert Pitch back on to print the score.

An Eb instrument transposes up a minor third (or down a major sixth). Transposing up a major third would be; for an instrument in E (a horn or trumpet perhaps).
To answer the OP: if you have the transposition set up correctly in the stave properties you have two options.
Option 1: Turn on concert pitch and enter the notes at concert (sounding) pitch.
Option 2: Turn off concert pitch and enter notes at transposed (written pitch).
The easiest way to have the staff properties correct is to select the correct instrument when setting up the score - then Musescore does the work for you.

Thanks for your replies....
I have looked again at the examples etc and these work..... but my problem is what moves where..?
Basically for this test/example I start from new score, I have a handwritten score in D Major that I want to key in to Musescore but someone wants to be able to to see and hear it in Bb major and flick between Concert sounding in Bb and Reading score in D major. As I said earlier I got the key sigs to appear but it played in D major pitch..... wrong way around..... Dmajor was concert ticked and Bb was concert not ticked.
What I have tried now is.... New score... no staff transpose....Key sig is D Maj....put in the notes...... then transpose this DMaj down to Bb maj.... and also set staff properties transpose to Major Third Down and this gives me Bb maj as concert (ticked) sounding and D maj and concert (not ticked)....
That seems to works OK.... I can hear it play at the lower Bb pitch.... and I can change instruments and reset the staff transposing to down major third on other instruments etc....
