Request for Programmers - New Project or Potential Plugin

• Jun 23, 2010 - 14:36

Hello,

I have joined the MuseScore forums because I have found a need for a program that doesn't seem to exist in either the proprietary or F/OSS worlds. It would have immense value for both students and active musicians. Based on the article at SourceForge, http://sourceforge.net/blog/wysiwyg-music-app-makes-a-score/, I know that Mr. Werner Schweer the originator of MuseScore has the coding chops that I lack.

My handle describes my situation perfectly. I am just a dad trying to get my son the tools he needs to advance his musical abilities.

When my son improvises on his guitar he constantly comes up with extremely cool bits and pieces that I believe would have value as part of a song or composition. The problem is that, because he's in the creative zone, he isn't always consciously aware of what he's just created and things get lost. He isn't always able to immediately recreate what he just performed. I know that this must happen to a great majority of musicians.

What I've been looking for is a program that when opened creates a directory date and timestamped per use. It accepts an incoming MIDI signal, plays the signal against whatever default MIDI instrument the user has defined. It also writes the MIDI file(s) out. The user is able to define the length of pause (in seconds) that the program tracks to determine if it is one or multiple files written per session.

These MIDI files can then be imported into any suitable notation program whether it be MuseScore or another..

On the hardware side, I'm building a MIDI interface for my son's guitar using the Arduino platform because the Roland GK-3 and associated gear is ridiculously expensive and doesn't provide the flexibility needed.

What you are looking for is a MIDI recorder. Unfortunatly there is often an misunderstanding between MIDI and score.
There are a lot of free software with MIDI recording capabilities. Check MusE or Ardour for example.

neither of these tools quite does what is needed.

I have found that there are any number of sequencers that will record MIDI. Many do not allow for the export of MIDI files for importation into notation software.

I strongly desire the tool to be cross platform. I am setting up a Linux DAW for my son but most parents are still running either some version of Windows or Macs.

One of the key attributes that is needed is for the program to record in snippets based on a user configurable/defined pause time. It is extremely hard to go through a large MIDI file to find that small piece that you remembered playing.

I really do believe that this idea would be invaluable as a learning tool. It would greatly facilitate the reading of music by young musicians. It would also greatly decrease the time required to get a base idea down for any composition as it would allow the musician to play with ideas on their instrument and then use their preferred notation software to make whatever additions or modifications. needed.
