Mill Hill Rag, by me

• Oct 25, 2010 - 13:30

This is the 2nd part in the composition. Note how it goes to IV, not V stage in the 2nd part. And it's an AB structure, not ABA. The 1st part is ABA, where the keys go I-V-I. To follow the style of Scott Joplin. And the 4 bar intro is omitted if this part is played together with the first part.

It's written for a local brass sextet. Mill Hill (or Kvarnåsen in Swedish) refers to a beautiful hill in my home town. The 1st part is named Promenad and this 2nd part is named Kuckustenen, the name of a beautiful view tower on the hill. The tower dates back to the golden age of ragtime.

The sounds of the instruments are not the best ones and give an unbalanced sound of the whole ensemble. But I think MuseScore does a very good job in playing it, despite the fact that I haven't added a single articulation mark yet.

I am a Joplin fan and enjoyed the rhythm and harmonies. Have you thought about arranging a piano version? I would print it and play it if you did.

I might do that. But since this rag is originally written for a brass sextet, there might be some passages that sound dull when played on a piano. Some passages have some "dialog" between the different instruments and a single piano might not bring out the idea. But that's nit picking.
I do have one other rag, too, made originally for piano. Actually it was originally done for a computer game a friend of mine did, and hence it might contain passages that are not very comfortable to be played on a piano. But I did try to write it in a true Joplin style, as played on a piano, though the target was just a simple midi file to be played as game music.

i hope you'll give the piano try a go. i'm no expert at it, but i do play. i would be willing to go through the piece and tell you what is tricky for an amateur player. i'm guessing other people would be willing to do that, too..

Here comes the first part. It's an ABA structure, following the style of Joplin. It ends in an F7 chord, suggesting the next part to continue in Bb. The exact keys and how the two parts fit together is yet to be fixed.
This 1st part might be more difficult to adapt for piano. My first priority is to get the sheet music ready for our local brass sextet.

here's a compilation of the whole rag, made with MuseScore. Some reverb added with Audacity. The sounds I used were 2 trumpets, a french horn, two trombones and a tuba.
