horizontal brackets (square slurs?)
Hello,
I would like to use horizontal brackets for the purpose of music analysis (e.g., to show a motif, countersubject, etc.). These would look similar to slurs, but rectangular instead of curved. How may I do this?

You can use one of the last line in the Lines palette. Drag it to the score then right click on line properties and to add vertical lines.

Thank you, I didn't know that you could add vertical bars to the lines. That's what I'm looking for, but it still seems like a very time-consuming process. Is there no shortcut for this?
For slurs, I can select a range of notes, then hit S. This creates a slur that starts at the first note, ends at the last, and is automatically positioned.
To create a horizontal bracket, I have to drag a line onto the score, double-click it to be able to resize it appropriately, reposition it, right-click to get to properties, then click three more times to specify that I want hooks and no diagonal lines. If the hooks are to point up instead of down, then I must manually edit the hook length for both ends.
It would be nice to be able to simply select a range of notes, then click on a 'bracket' icon from the Lines palette to produce an appropriate bracket -- or, for that matter, an 8va or Ped marking, et cetera.
In any case, thanks again for help; I now see how to better use the Lines palette.
