Accents (Sforzato) absent during playback

• Dec 13, 2010 - 17:01

All,

I have noticed when I'm writing my drum parts, that the placements of accents (sforzato) does not result in a change of velocity during playback. I have been hacking my way around this in v0.9.6.3 in a very cumbersome fashion, but I noticed on my old version (v0.9.5 rev 2012) that when I inserted accents, AND assigned a dynamic level (e.g., mf, ff, etc.) then the accented notes would play back with the correct sound (i.e., there was a distinction in velocity between the accented, and unaccented notes). NOTE: The accent velocity would not change until I assigned the dynamic level.

In the xml instrument list file, there is an articulation note at the top that assigns sforzato a velocity of 120%:

100%
100%

85%

100%

120%

My question is why is this not reflected in the playback of musescore v0.9.6.3, but is present in v0.9.5?

Please forgive me if this has already been fixed... I've searched and cannot seem to find the correct topic. If it has been fixed, please let me know where I can find the patch!

Also, can someone let me know if the xml "articulation" file is where the velocity for each articulation is defined? I ask, because when marching drummers see the "sforzato" then the interpretation is to give the note a little extra "oomf" (i.e., increase the velocity by 20%), but when they see the "umarcato" then the interpretation is usually "give it the max" (i.e., velocity of 127). If I can tweak that on my own personal xml file, then that would help in my own writing.

Thanks!

Mike S.

Sorry, that XML display did not turn out very well. See the attached screenshot.

I took a quick look. In the instruments.xml file, if you look for Articulation, you'll find two blocks, one at the beginning and one in the Piano definition.
The first one is meant to be global articulation settings but as far as I can tell does not work for the moment.
The second one, in an instrument definition seems to work. In MuseScore 0.9.6.3 with the standard instruments.xml file, if you create a piano part, with a dynamic, one note and a sforzato then the velocity of the note is changed (right click on the note -> note properties for the note velocity and right click on the dynamic, dynamic properties for the dynamic velocity).

So, for your instruments.xml definition, you should be able to add articulation elements, in all the instruments and tweak them as you want, and it should work. Let us know.

lasconic,

I played around with the articulation code as you had suggested. I tried placing it both within the block for instrument group, and also within the block for each individual instrument.

When placed within the instrument group block, the articulation yields no effect. When placed within the block for each individual instrument, it works.

So to make a long story short, I have updated the instrumentswithDL.xml file to include +30% accents (sforzato) and Velocity=127 umarcato for the marching percussion instruments. (I actually cheated on the umarcato, and just set it to +500%). These definitions of sforzato and umarcato for the marching percussion seems to be consistent with my own experience and with my discussions with other percussionists. That file is available for download at http://sites.google.com/site/mhsbulldogdrumline/composition. I did not update any other instrument.

Sincerely,

Mike S.
