Work in progress, duet for violin and bassoon

• Jan 3, 2011 - 11:19

This is the 2nd movement to a composition I started to work on some weeks ago.
I got inspired by a discussion I had with my wife. She threw a title out of the blue, something like "Ouverture for violin and bassoon by Örnöld Merikanto". After 15 minutes I sat down, started MuseScore and began writing, completely from top of my head. After 20 minutes, half of the 1st movement was there. no, it was not an orchestral ouverture, but a simple duet. Anyway, the 1st movement is not ready yet, but I started to work on this 2nd movement and it came along quite easy, though totally differently. It might not even match with the 1st movement, don't know yet.
The 20 minute session i spent on the 1st movement was kind of a test on how easy it is to write something quick with MuseScore. I must say MuseScore doesn't prevent my composing creativity in any way. It really is a smooth tool, smoother than Sibelius, which requires a lot of learning and training before one gets comfortable with it.

for my money, the repeated ''b flats" were more than i wanted. i like that you broke the melody up with chromatic notes. wonder if that would work, use more of those in place of the b flats to shake it up a little.

i wanted the climax after the half note chord to last longer, but i probably haven't listened to as much classical as you, so take that with a grain of salt.

it's strength is it's stateliness. i also like how you let things wind down naturally by repeating the eighth note figure you introduce in bar three.
