measure layout

The basic use model of using "line breaks" to control measure layout works, but it can be rather non-intuitive. Say you're looking at a piece of music, and you decide the a given system has one too many measures on it. You fix this by putting a line break at the end of the second-to-last measure (select barline, ht Enter). But what if you decide a system has one too *few* measures on it? Then the solution depends on whether you had previously put a line break on that system or not. If so, then you delete that line break and hope that results in another measure moving up. if you had not previously put a line break on the system, then the way to get more measures on the system is to select the measures you wish to appear on the same system and decrease stretch. I suppose you can use that method to move measures down, too.

Anyhow, the use model in Finale strikes me as more straightforward. If a line has too many measures, select a measure you'd like to move down and hit "down". If a line has too few measures, select a measure on the next line you'd like to move up and hit "up".

Under the hood, I think the exact same thing is happening - a line break is inserted, and measures are compressed or stretched as necessary. But the interface matches how one thinks about this better. Any chance of seeing something similar in MuseScore?

BTW, one other useful enhancement I'd like to see for measure layout - a way to "lock in" the current layout. Select a range of measures, hit a button, and have line breaks inserted on all measures that currently end a system. That way, after making a series of adjustments in which you inserted breaks on some systems but accepted the defaults on others, you could lock it in and be assured that subsequent small edits won't have unintended effects on measure layout.
