Drum input in version 1.0

I am trying version 1.0 in Windows Vista - a program I find not very co-operative.

The piece I am writing starts with a bass drum (and is in 8/8 time) which is joined by various other percussion. I select the bass drum bar 1 and it will allow me to input a quaver. This quaver should then be followed by 6 quaver rests but for some reason they will not enter. The drum pallet shows only a crotchet on a stave when I click it, and when I try to enter crotchet rests they do not go either.. The handbook does not seem to address this subject, and the forum subjects do not seem to either.

Have I missed something obvious?
