Playback not working under Linux

• Feb 13, 2016 - 12:17

I installed 2.0.2 on a fresh install of Lubuntu 15.10, on a HP EliteBook 8470p last week. It appeared to be perfectly fine, but I've just found that I cannot play scores - the options are greyed out. In the I/O tab of the preferences, all the options are also greyed out, and unchangeable - most are actually blank. Other programs on this system appear to do audio quite normally. This morning I installed the current MuseScore under Windows 7 on the same machine (it's dual boot), and the audio on the Windows installation seems fine.

Any suggestions for fixing the Linux installation would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

With kubuntu 15.10 I run Musescore 2.0.2 with sound.
In I/O ALSA is ticked

Also check in "files" in which repertory MS looks for sound file, and if there is a file in this repertory....

It's certainly an ubuntu issue, rather than MuseScore. I have xubuntu 15.10 (so, basically the same under the hood) and the same MuseScore settings as you (the greyed-out options become selectable only if you change from Pulseaudio). I can't remember how I set it up but think that I looked up an ubuntu troubleshooting guide on the internet. I still sometimes get problems with distortion on playback but if I go to the sound settings and move the volume slider for MuseScore even just a percent or so then it clears it up.

Pulseaudio on ubuntu depends on several things including your sound card so your best bet is to search for 15.10 sound troubleshooting or for your specific laptop model or its soundcard.

You also need to have a soundfont installed in MuseScore (Menu ->View ->Synthesiser and see if there is a soundfont installed).
