Changing the sound of an instrument track mid-song

In a piece I've composed, the electric guitar must switch from a clean tone to a distorted one (with a pedal).
I haven't found a good way to make the sound change happen in Musescore. The "Change Instrument" text option doesn't help because the distorted guitar sound isn't technically an instrument. Also, the F10 sound options doesn't allow for mid-song sound changes (or at least I haven't found it yet)
