MuseScore 2 in Windows 10 will not open
I have a new PC purchased in December which came with Windows 10. I installed MS 2.0.3 in January and was able to use it with no issues. Starting around mid-March, the program would not open. Clicking on the icon causes the little wheel to turn and then nothing. I am getting appcrash reports, see example text below. I am in no way shape or form a computer person - I've done what I could find in the forums. I have:
1) uninstalled/reinstalled the 2.0.3, 2.0.1 and the portable versions with no success.
2) Deleted Win 10 system updates back to January, including other software programs.
3)Tried opening through a command prompt window, both 'plain' and as admin, again with the little wheel popping up then nothing, as follows:
---
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.14393]

C:\Users\Kathy Home>"C:\Program Files (x86)\MuseScore 2\bin\MuseScore.exe" -F
C:\Users\Kathy Home>"C:\Program Files (x86)\MuseScore 2\bin\MuseScore.exe" -F -w -s
C:\Users\Kathy Home>
4) Install MS 1.3 which DID run but won't open any of my files.
5) tried running the .exe file as admin
6) tried troubleshooting compatibility using Win 7, 8 and XP settings.
I am at my wits end - I can run the program on an ancient laptop in Windows 7 but cannot downgrade this new PC to Win 7. I've restarted my PC at various points in this process with no change. The appdata\roaming folder only holds the desktop's shortcut, not the actual file.
Here is the app crash report is after one of the cmd prompt attempts (don't recall which line).

She said she reverted to factory settings in her original post.
@Kathy - have you added any new peripherals before MuseScore stopped running? Check this out https://musescore.org/en/handbook/known-incompatibilities
In reply to She said she reverted to by mike320
Ah, I missed that.
No new peripherals. I did, just to be sure, unplug my speakers. No change. all kinds of reboots and re-installations. It feels like a Windows 10 issue.

It does sound like a windows 10 issue, but I can't think of anyone else who has had that problem that the info in this forum didn't fix. I'll keep thinking and maybe someone else will see this and come up with a solution.
Ok...going a bit further with the incompatibility theory, I removed some real and virtual devices from my PC, after a successful, crash-free, complete latest Windows Update through an ethernet connection instead of wif. After the reboot, I deleted the following:
o Fitbit driver
o Amyumi pdf driver linked to QuickBooks 2009
o Two Network Windows Media Player software devices from my old and even older computers.
o Some kind of 'home control' driver from my husband's work laptop. This was a surprise.
I also switched the default printer to the Canon printer from the native Quickbooks PDF Converter 3.0 'printer' and turned on Windows Firewall. (Quickbooks is very old, buggy and changes the default printer everytime I use it.)
Speakers are still unplugged. I did not reinstall MS 2.0.3 but simply clicked on the desktop's shortcut.
Musescore launched!
I reinstalled the FitBit device driver. MS still launches.
My money is on the Amyumi pdf driver. There are known issues with the driver: https://www.proformative.com/blogs/doug-sleeter/2013/08/24/quickbooks-p…
Maybe we've discovered a new thing - that's up to you guys!

Glad to hear of your success. You can also plug your speakers back in. They are very unlikely to cause MuseScore to not run or crash.
In reply to Glad to hear of your success. by mike320
Thanks so much for the incompatibility hints - my shotgun approach doesn't help with the exact issue but I'll take it.
Speakers are plugged back in and work with MS (especially when mute is turned off). The only reason I unplugged them is because they are my newest peripheral. Even then, they were plugged in back in January.
Incidentally, Open Office Calc is now working too and at warp speed. I was unable to open an .ods file over the weekend with a very similar hanging that I was experiencing with MS. Maybe the problem is Quickbook's switch to the default printer. If I find that a change in default printer by Quickbooks recreates the issue, I'll add a note here.
K
An update a month later - reuse of QuickBooks Pro 2009 today (5/16) re-installed that Amyumi PDF printer and guess what...Musescore didn't open. I went to the device manager, deleted the Quickbooks PDF printer 'device' and Musescore now opens.
In reply to An update a month later - by Kathy Violette
Maybe it just doesn't like that Amyumi PDF printer being the default printer? As that is used/interrogated to determin the default paper size and orientation.
Should be worth getting added to https://musescore.org/en/handbook/known-incompatibilities, where we have something very similar already, with Nitro PDF. There it was enough to not have it being the default printer
In reply to Maybe it just doesn't like by Jojo-Schmitz
I bet you're right - that default printer issue interferes with other programs too. I'll update if/when it shows up again.
