A most basic question
I have a century-old score for a band march that I would like to input, playback & capture in an mp3 (or whatever) sound file. Is this something that MuseScore can do? Is there a font for a brass band.

There is no reason why musescore couldn't do it. By font, I guess you mean the soundfont for the mp3 rendering right?

I think a soundfont may be what I need but don't have a clue about any of this. My last involvement with music was playing the bass clarinet in the school band before Ringo Starr joined The Beatles. From the FAQ I got the sense that soundfonts are how you get particular sounds, say brass band (probably not very popular these days) or heavy metal or country western. The more explicit the answers the better because I don't know where here is regarding MuseScore.
Musescore can do this.
First I suggest using Musescore to write out the parts. Then check into how to replay and record them in an acceptable manner.
It is all possible.

I'm glad to hear this. When you say to use MuseScore to write out the parts, do you mean to let it orchestrate it for you? All the Library of Congress had was a score with a pair of treble and base staffs. Would I play this back using soundfonts for, say, trumpets for the treble and tubas for the bass or will MuseScore create parts for other instruments from what it is provided?

You will have to notate it into musescore. There are optical music readers, but I think they need a lot of tweaking.
