More Glissandi Questions

• Jan 5, 2015 - 19:03

I'm trying to figure out why the glissandi won't work. Every time I hook it to a note and the next on the flutes, it stays on that note until the next one plays. What am I doing wrong? I'm also having a problem with the trills. It doesn't make my piccolos flutter like they're supposed to!

By "work" I assume you mean, affect playback. MuseScore is a notation program first and foremost; it's main goal is to produce a printed (or online) score for human musicians to read. Glissandi and trills both "work" in this sense - they appear in your score.

The computer playback feature is included to give you an idea of how your score might eventually sound, but it is not to be expected that everything you can put in a printed score will be supported for computer playback. Eventually, once the core notation features have matured to the point where more attention can be given other feature, we might begin to see more of the markings supported for computer playback.

Sorry if I sound annoyed. This is my first time using your software, and I've had nothing but frustration using it. I had pretty high expectations with this software, but I guess I shouldn't have such high standards. Converting my Sibelius scores into it has been painstakingly difficult, and my patience is running thin. I'm a pretty busy guy, so getting my scores converted and uploaded quickly is very important to me.

Putting my anger aside, your product has great potential. Will the glissandi, trills, and tremolos at least play in the uploaded video like the others on your site? And what did you mean by the last sentence of your reply?

Sorry to hear you have been having trouble. I recall you were trying to import scores from Sibelius, and you are no doubt limited by the very nature of MusicXML as a format and by the limited support for it. I seem to recall Sibelius didn't support it at all until a couple of years ago, and I believe I have heard it still gets better rersults if you bypass their own built in support and instead use the Dolet plugin. But that's just hearsay.

Anyhow, you don't say why you are trying to import these scores at all or what your ultimatr goal is. I would emphasize again the main goal of MuseScore is to produce notated scores. Since you already have the music notated in Sibelius, I am not sure what you were expecting to gain by importing them into MuseScore. At best, I'd have expected to expend a lot of effort just to get results that were at best "as good as" but no better than what you started with. So if you were expecting there to be to some sort of payoff - some way in which your existing scores would somehow be better off in MuseScore than in Sibelius - then indeed, I'd say your expectations might be unreasonably high.

On the other hand, if you focus on creating *new* scores, then I daresay that MsueScore will do the job at least 90% as well as Sibelius, for 0% of the price. So if you go in with that attitude there slould not be anything to be frustrated about.

A few final (for now) notes:

- Any software as sophisticated as MuseScore comes with a learning curve. I'm sure you'd have had just as much frustration trying to learn Sibelius in a week. Or Finale.

- When you speak of upload, I assume you are referring to the musescore.com website. The playback there is basically MuseScore itself running on a server. So since MuseScore does not support playback of glissandi or trills on your computer, it won't support them on the server either. Not sure what you mean "like the others on your site" - MuseScore does not support playback of those symbols, period. Not for you, not for me, not for anyone else. Tremolo *is* supported for 2.0, though - but that won't be available on musescore.com until there is an actual released 2.0 product, as opposed to just the experimental prerelease builds that are available now.

- What I meant by my last sentence in my previous post is exactly what i wrote. Not sure what about was unclear. MuseScore is, as I have said, primarily about notation, not playback. So the highest priority is getting notation features to work as well as possible - meaning both ease of creating the notation and quality of the printed result. Only after those priorities are satisfied does it make sense to focus much attention on less-improtant features like playback. That said, there have been quite a few significant playback improvements made from MuseScore 1.3 to the upcoming 2.0 release. To the point where I'd wager MsueScore's playback facilities at version 2.0 are far beyond what either Finale or Sibelius could offer at that stage in their development. But again, if your primary goal is playback, then perhaps your expectations are indeed unrealistic, particularly if you were expecting the results from MsueScore to somehow be "better" than those from Sibelius and thus justify the work required to import your existing scores in the first place.

Wow. Um, I didn't realize... OK, so my main goal for converting my pieces is to make it sound as pretty as possible and to the exact way I want to hear it. Dynamics and all. That's what I get with Sibelius, so you can imagine I wasn't expecting your program to work the way it does. Man, I shouldn't be such a perfectionist. I gets me so uptight and demanding that I forget what's really important. Thank you for your help!

I am now ready to upload my marching band piece to your site. Thanks again!
