How to control measures in a system?
MS seems to sometimes expand a measure unnecessarily to fill a line or sometimes compresses to add more measures at random. How can one control this behavior? PS I am a new user but have used MusicTime quite a bit.

Hi. Just a general comment, but, if you have not already done so, I suggest a quick read through the Handbook: http://musescore.org/en/handbook
:)
FWIW, it should never be "unnecessary" or "random" . MuseScore uses very specific calculations regarding the minimum width of each measure and the threshold beyond which a line is filled. If you prefer different minimum measure widths or a different threshold for when a line is expanded, there are a number of parameters to play with in Style / General.
You can also force fewer lines on a given system the same way you'd force fewer words on a given line in a text editor - by adding an explicit line break.
if you need help with specifics, please psot the score you are having problems with and describe what in particular you'd like to see different.

To add a line break, see http://musescore.org/en/handbook/break-or-spacer
Thanks. I got it, at least somewhat. I did not recognize the hard line break symbols the MS had inserted. Removing those made it work better. I'll keep learning, I hope.
