Real time tempo control during playback

• Feb 5, 2011 - 19:38

Our local village choir does not have a pianist, but has a Yamaha P-85 digital piano. I want to provide accompaniments by using MuseScore to input scores to my computer then play them in real time as MIDI files output to the P-85 piano. I have a UX16 USB to MIDI adapter to connect my Sony Vaio PCG-FX109K laptop to the P-85. But I want to be able to control the tempo and volume of the accompaniments in real time during playback, e.g. follow the conductor rather than use tempo settings in the MuseScore playback module.
a) does anyone know how I could do this? I can use either Windows XP or Puppy Linux (based on Ubuntu)? Yamaha suggested I need a sequencer like Cubase. Any thoughts? How about MIDI Show Control software?
b) do I need additional hardware to input the tempo and volume signals or would something enable me to tap keys on the computer to the time the conductor sets and varies over the piece?
c) it would be useful if the software would allow me to set up a list of pieces, e.g. the set of pieces for a choir concert and play them in concert programme order.
Cheers

You could use any MIDI player such as Timidity or Van Basco Karaoke player. Both of them have controls for volume & tempo together with playlist support.

Many thanks, lasconic. The vanBasco Karaoke Player looks as if will do the business, once I have had a bit of practise with the tempo and volume controls! The keeper of the Yamaha piano will bring it round on Monday, so I'll be able to test the whole system then.
Many thanks for your help.
