As you enter notes, the measure (bar?) will resize to fit them, spacing the measures out. If you want to force this earlier, drop a line break (under Breaks and Spacer pallete, the green icon with the arrow) on the end of measure 4 or 5. Or you could run the "Break Every X Measures" plugin to force X measures per line.
The note entry bar where you choose the value of the note you want, rests etc. is showing so small, I cant read them. This recently happened so I know it's not right
Also, FWIW, you don't really need the toolbar if you know the keyboard shortcuts, which take only minutes to learn, and entry goes faster that way, too. The note durations are keyed to the number keys, with 3 for sixteenth, 4 for eighth, 5 for quarter, 6 for half, and 7 for whole. Tie is "+", etc. You can also customize the shortcuts via Edit->Preferences->Shortcuts.
1. Open up Preferences
2. Under the Icons section there are numbers for General and Note Entry. These have likely gotten "adjusted" wrong.
3. Enter 24 and 24 under General and 24 and 30 under Note Entry to reset the values.
Alternatively, you can press the Reset To Default button, but this will reset other things.
But in the future, don't post unrelated questions in the same thread - first search to see if there are any existing threads on the new topic, then start a new one if not.

Oh, you mean the toolbar. Try a factory reset?

Thanks, don't know how to reset it though

Read this: http://musescore.org/en/handbook/revert-factory-settings
But perhaps posting a screen shot might produce a less intrusive fix. A factory reset does remove all your MS custimizations.

I just found where this problem can occur:
1. Open up Preferences
2. Under the Icons section there are numbers for General and Note Entry. These have likely gotten "adjusted" wrong.
3. Enter 24 and 24 under General and 24 and 30 under Note Entry to reset the values.
