how to notate grace note in the middle of a slur?

• Nov 18, 2011 - 22:35

I have a measure for guitar that I'm trying to score and am guessing that it would be best represented by a grace note between two slurred notes, but am not sure. I'm attaching a sample where I show three different attempts to notate this. The first measure has the 'E' explicitly as a 32nd note but I had to move the slur manually to show that the ligado is really from the 'C' to the 'B'. The 2nd and 3rd measure show two options with acciaccatura and appoggiatura grace notes (MS seems to be very accepting of the grace "interrupting" the slur).

I *think* the 3rd measure is the way to notate this, but during MS playback, it's the first measure that sounds the closest rhythmically to what I want to hear (maybe measures two and three suffer from this issue: http://musescore.org/en/node/4879 ?) Any opinions on whether measure 1, 2, 3 is "best"?

Is the E played on the open string?

Or is it one of these trick ligados performed with the index finger of the right hand?

Looks like a clawhammer piece?

It seems to me that this kind of thing is better notated in Rock School format with the notation above and the TAB below.

I adopted this format for my teaching several years ago, as it is so much clearer than complicating the notation with fingering signs.
