Change of Fonts Fails
I am using the standard fonts but when I try to modify/change the font it does not change.

Are you changing fonts via Style → Text Style...? If so the font changes will load after closing and reopening the document. This is a known bug. (See Text styles not applied )

Tried the above work around but the font remains unchanged.
Did you save the score when you closed the document? Did you change the text style you intended to change?

Saved the document and re-opened as requested but font remains the same.

I'm having this problem too. I've changed the text styles in the style dialog box, I've tried clicking apply, I've tried clicking OK, I've saved the document and closed and reopened, I've quitted the entire programme and reopened, and the text styles just stay as they were. Interestingly when I open the text style dialog box up again, it still has my changes, they just haven't been applied on the score.
I'm working on a mac, does that make a difference?

Its a known problem in version 0.9.5. The problem is addressed in the latest prerelease via right-click > Text Properties > "Apply to all similar text". See http://www.musescore.org/en/node/2472
