Ties
I've got a section in the bass of a piano part where I've got a tied note, and decided to add octaves below (using shift-8) ... for some reason, I can't tie the bottom octave. When I use select the bottom note that I want to tie with the previous one and press the + key, strange things happen (such as the removal of the top note, or alteration of the note values and removal of other notes), but the note is not tied with the next. Any idea what's going on?

Are you certain that one is not a chromatic semitone from the other?

Select the stem and hit +
If you select individual notes you will get the behaviour you're describing.
