Help! Grace notes are too fast!

• Dec 5, 2016 - 08:32

Hi All,

I have run into a small problem. When I place a grace note and then using the playback function I play it the grace notes can be barely heard. What can I do to slow them down without having to slow down the whole piece?

Thanks in advance!

Gabriel

What type of grace note? Acciaccatura (with a slash through the stem) or appoggiatura (no slash)?

It would also help if you were to post the score (or a relevant small section) which demonstrates the issue.

Your grace notes were set as "Grace note after". Changing them to "Grace notes before" makes them play correctly and they are then audible (just about - but this is due to the slow attack intrinsic to the cello sample in the default soundfont). See (or rather, hear, the attached file)

I'm not sure about *why* there should be a difference between playback of grace notes "before" as opposed to grace notes "after" though - maybe Marc or one of the other developers could shed some light on that?

Grace notes after are a relatively new feature in MuseScore, and currently there simply is no support for playback of these that I am aware of. That's in part because depending on the reason for using these, there is no single correct interpretation. If you are wanting ordinary grace notes, they should be added as grace notes before.

Thanks for the clarification, Marc; that makes sense. I actually wonder why the "Grace Note After" option is there at all - I can't see any use for it myself. Not saying it *shouldn't* be there but It would be interesting to understand in which musical circumstance(s) someone would choose to use it over "Grace Note Before".

Grace notes - assuming they are acciaccaturas and not appoggiaturas - are *supposed* to be played fast. It's possible the specific instrument you are using in the specific soundfont you are using has a slow enough attack that very fast notes don't get a chance to sound fully. Feel free to attach your score so we can see if that's what is happening, or if perhaps your expectations are just different from other people's as to how fast they should be.
