String numbers next to Instruments

• Jul 8, 2012 - 02:19

In Instruments (and perhaps certain other places elsewhere?), I think the number of strings next to an instrument should be removed.

For instance, there is 'Electric Bass (4-str. TAB)'.

Users that wish to have six strings may wonder why it isn't listed. Instead, it should be called 'Electric Bass (TAB)'.

What do others think?

A standard bass has 4 strings.

So anyone writing for bass in combination with other instruments would normally write this way.

5 & 6 string basses do exist, but are not standard, and users of these instruments can play from standard 4 line tab anyway.

I think it should be left as is.

It's a long time since this was originally posted but I also want to comment.

At the moment the list under "Guitar" is not consistent. Both Electric Bass and Ukulele have tab versions which are labelled "(4 str. TAB)" but "Guitar" and instruments in the "Other fretted instruments" and "Strings" section just have "(Tablature)". Is there a reason for the inconsistency? Most bass guitars have 4 strings as do ukuleles so surely a 4 line tab would be expected without specifying it.
