Weird playback issues MuseScore 2.0.3 and AppImage 2.1
My problem appears to be similar to that experienced by other users over the past few years, although it is the first time I have experienced it myself. New install Ubuntu 16.04 MuseScore 2.0.3. A weird static with playback. Stock synth. Adjusting volume on synth no change. Uninstall and reinstall no change. Uninstall and use of AppImage 2.1 no change.

After a number of system reinstalls and other hoops that I have jumped through to get rid of this issue, here are my thoughts on MuseScore in relationship to Ubuntu based distros. Your mileage may vary as much of this appears to be based on a combination of DE (desktop environment), audio controls and hardware. Running Musescore on the Microwatt R10 version of WattOS is usually rock solid, but the above problem started on my homebuilt tower computer, with Microwatt installed. The official Ubuntu MATE 16.04 is rock solid on all of my computers. Both distros have had Ubuntu Studio bits installed on my computers using:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get install linux-lowlatency && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio ubuntustudio-audio-plugins
My worst experience as per above issues is with a stock Ubuntu Studio 16.04 install and MuseScore. I am assuming it has something to do with XFCE4 being extremely buggy. The volume change notification window kept popping up with no change in volume, and the playback issues were shifting between serious and non-existent in the same login session. Unclear as to what was causing this behavior.
Adding the KXStudio repos may also affect MuseScore, but the KXStudio repos have a compiled version of WineASIO and LinuxSampler, plus a lot of plug-ins, that are quite compelling.
My two cents... I hope it helps.

RE: "...XFCE4 being extremely buggy"
I am using XFXE4, Linixmint's version, as my main OS and I find it very stable and responsive for audio production. I have had little issues running Musescore on it. I prefer XFCE as it is less resource-intensive than other gnu/linux distros that I have tried. My other OS of choice would be Linuxmint's MATE, also relatively light-weight.
My one cent,
Sam

XFCE4 mileage may vary, but I have specifically tied this extreme bugginess to Ubuntu Studio 16.04. As I pointed out, it is difficult to ascertain how much is the DE and how much the hardware, but I have never before experienced anything like this. However, this is digressing from the purpose at hand, which was to provide some personal experiences that can either help diagnose this issue, which a number of other people have experienced, or at least to provide some information that will help other people to steer clear of the same problems that I experienced.
