layers - preliminary testing

• Aug 14, 2020 - 05:03

This is something that's been on my wish list for a while and I was pleasantly surprised to find it being implemented. It will be valuable when I publish works for classic guitar where fingering can be a godsend at times.

A few points I've noticed so far:

a) The function seems to work well and as expected, although doco could be clearer in the step-by-step setup process.

b) If a list selection of fingerings is made, the layer parameter is only set for a single fingering rather than all those in the list.

c) Some non-fingering objects are required in guitar fingering - text objects such as a positional indicator (usually Roman numerals), use of Barrre and half-barre, brackets indicating duration of the above. These are usually done as text objects which can't have a layer parameter set. Maybe within the fingering palette there could be a fingering text-object that could hold any of these ancillary things, and would be layerable.

Thanks for this functionality and I look forward to it being fully operational!

Are you referring to the old experimental layer feature to put fingerings or other markings on a layer you could display or not? This isn't anything new, it was implemented many years ago but never quite finished, so it is hidden behind a command line option to enable experimental features. And it has been almost completely ignored since, so probably it doesn't work now as well as it did back in 2014 or whenever it was last tested. I'd like to see it come back, no doubt, but I'm not aware of any new work here.

Unless, maybe you are referring to some new developments in MuseScore 4 nightly builds, which is certainly possible, as I haven't kept up that well?

Yes, that's exactly what i'm referring to, Marc. I have not yet seen ms4.
What I've done is some user testing as it is a feature i'd find very useful if it were just fine-tuned a little more. Now, I have to maintain 2 versions - fingered and not - with the necessity of tweaking in both to keep up to date. I'd love to see it a little more fully implemented; what's there does seems to work reliably but could be made more usable without needing to contain new functionality.
Thanks for your always informative and authoritative comments on all topics, Marc.
