Timeline feature requests

Hello,

I have been trying to get used to using the timeline. I think the following features would be helpful improvements:

  • Save into preferences, which lines are being shown or hidden (Tempo, Time Signature etc) and show the same ones next time MuseScore is started
  • Save into preferences, the Zoom levels which was last shown (or have a configurable default)
  • Add a Zoom-to-fit option as an alternative to of mousewheel control.
  • Document that on Mac OS, Zoom is adjusted with command + mousewheel instead of ctrl + mousewheel (or make it consistent between platforms)
  • Horizontal zooming does not appear to be supported on Mac OS
  • Allow it to be dragged to a position the bottom of the score (like the Navigator) so it takes up the width of the score but not the width of the whole window (i.e. so that the palettes and inspector can retain full window height)
  • Allow instrument rows to be made smaller. (I don't find I need to be able to read the name of the instrument).

These are good suggestions, I encourage you to submit them to the issue tracker on this site so we don't lose track of them.

But first a couple of clarifications:

  • the documentation is open source like the source, so if there is a change you'd like to see to a given Handbook page, just edit it using the "..." menu
  • do you mean the zoom that happens with ctrl+wheel? what happens instead? what about cmd+wheel?
  • I assume you realize it can be undocked and then sized as you like, but I realize that's the the same as what you are asking and might not work for your situation

BTW, playing with it just now, I just realized you can toggle instrument visibility directly within the timeline, If I ever knew that before, I had completely forgotten.

Sorry, typo. I meant the horizontal scrolling which should be with shift+wheel or alt+wheel. In the case of shift+wheel, nothing happens; in the case of alt+wheel it scrolls up and down as though I had no modifier pressed.

Weird, shift+scroll works on my systems. Is this a physical mouse or a trackpad? On the latter I'd expect horizontal two-finger swipe itself to do the job (and it does on my own devices, none of which are macOS).

Does Shift+scroll work elsewhere in MuseScore for you (eg, for the score itself)?
