Musescore imposing an unwanted pickup measure
First measure of a 6/8 piece - I'm only being allowed two beats. It isn't a pickup measure; I want the first measure to contain six entire beats. When I go to enter the notes after the first two beats, they are automatically tied over into the next measure. Maybe I inadvertently selected this to be a pickup measure? How do I get that first measure to contain six beats?

Right click in the measure and from Measure Properties set the actual duration to 6/8. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/measure-operations#duration
Or
Use CTRL+Delete to remove the pick up measure and start entering notes in the new and full length first measure.
Note that you can tell whether a measure is the length corresponding to the time signature. If it has a grey - it is shorter, if it has a grey + it is longer. If it has neither it is "just right" as Goldilocks said
