But note the spacer symbol you see on the screen is an unprintable item. It is usually useful to keep it visible on the screen so that you can edit it or delete it easily (and so you don't forget you put it there). Whatever you do with it, it will not show up on the printed version or in an exported pdf.

To be clear: the spacer is what reduces the space. If you are using a spacer - to deliberately create uneven spacing, normally - you need to leave the spacer there, that's the whole point. As mentioned, it doesn't print or export to PDF, it's like the lines around frames or the little icons for system breaks, just there to help you see what's going on while editing. And as mentioned, you can hide them if they bother you while editing.

Note that as I indicated, the main point of spacers is to produce uneven spacing. If your goal was actually to create less space more uniformly, spacers aren't normally the right tool, instead the various setting in Format / Style / Page are more relevant.
