Use symbols as notes
I have inserted the "maxima" symbol from "medieval and renaissance music notes" palette, but it doesn't seem the system recognizes it as a maxima note. Is there any way to redefine the symbol as a note?

No. Longa is the longest duration MuseScore supports currently. And none of the mensural noteheads are supported (other than as mere symbols)
