Splitting organ part into instruments

• May 23, 2022 - 11:52

Hi brains trust,

I've just notated an organ part with 2 staves of two voices each - 1, 2, 3 and 4. Now I'd like to copy each voice individually across parts for various transposing instruments (trumpet, trombone etc). I tried selecting a voice and then copy-and-pasting to an instrument's stave, but nothing happened when I pasted. How do I do this?

Thanks!

Hard to say what might have gone wrong just from that description - best to attach your score and give precise steps to reproduce the problem. Then we can understand and assist better. As it is, my best guess is that you made a "list" selection (eg, Select / More / Same voice) rather than a range selection (with blue box around it, using the View / Selection Filter to limit by voice. But FWIW, also look into the Tools / Explode command (see Handbook under Tools for more info).

"Two staves of two voices each - 1, 2, 3 and 4".

I think you have made the common mistake of not using voice 1 in one of your staves. Each stave can have up to four voices, but they should be used in numerical order starting from 1 for each stave. Voice 3 is available in the rare case that you have 3 rhythmically independent parts on a stave and voice 4 for the very rare case that you have 4 rhythmically independent parts.

See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/voices for a description of how voices should be used.
