Inspector cancels selected range of notes
If I select a range of notes in order to set stem directions to auto and then open the Inspector the selection is cancelled as soon as I press "stem".

There's no need to press Stem. With the notes selected (eg, select range, then press Notes, and you can then reset the stem direction directly from there (about half way down). Or, simpler - just press Ctrl+R to reset everything, if you're doing this to correct fixed stem directions from a MusicXML import and you haven't done any other manual adjustments that you wouldn't want reset.
