2-3 second delay in playback, and not just for the first playback

Using version 3.6.2.5 rev 3224f34 on a MacBook Pro (M1). Somewhat recently I've been experiencing 1-2 second delays for playback, both for starting the playback and for stopping it (that is, the playback continues for 1-2 seconds after I the playback arrowhead). This happens for every score I have tried, and does not go away after the first play.

I've seen earlier notes about this, and some report the latency stops after the initial playback. But not for me. Any ideas, suggestions? thanks M

I should add that that the cursor -- highlighting the note to be played -- starts "on time" and so is ahead of the note being played.

You can do some tests:
Turn off/on the Midi button in the command bar;
