How do you get copyright on first page of a score, only. I am obviously missing something as nothing I try works! Thanks

Thanks I finally did guess that. The pop up window says for 'first page only'. That was what I was trying to do/did. Why does anything else need to be checked/unchecked if you are doing what the pop up says?! I read the words!! Not getting the result. Then going in circles checking some boxes forgetting to check others. If you know all the boxes with an example much less guessing/frustration!!! Thanks again. (Now all I have to do is remember it next time) :)(:

To be clear, the checkbox controls whether the footer itself (not the copyright message within it) shows on the first page. As mentioned, this option is provided if you want to prevent the footer from appearing on a separate title page, if your score has one.

Whether or not the copyright message appears within the footer or not is an entirely unrelated matter. That's where the difference between $c and $C comes in - to control whether it is displayed on all pages that have a footer, or just the first page that has a footer. But still, it will only appear on pages that actually have a footer at all.

Marc. Thanks for the thought. I was hoping to get a little more info.
I (think) understand the what and why of the process and the where is mostly obvious. It is the how that I am not following. I have tried every option I can think of but still copyright on all pages or just odd pages. I am missing something. Any direct hint would be appreciated. Thanks again

As with most things it 'is' simple when you know how it works. As I said in another reply, I entered the date in the new score area. So, when I pull up style footers there was the date just where I wanted it. Great! But, on the score it was not how I wished. And nothing I was having to guess at worked. Nowhere in the manual does it say 'do not have the date in the footer box'. If it had, then yes, it is simple. Noone, even you did not mention this because you knew. The file, score properties was mentioned. When I looked there the date was already there also. I will have to leave off the date in New Score then add it in score properties. Then check in style, footers to see if the date shows up there?
Yea, it is simple when you have all the info. Thanks again for directions. It helped me to finally guess correctly!

You can put anything you like into the footer box if you want, so of course the Handbook doesn't tell you not to, and of course no one here told you that because that would have been a lie, and we don't like to lie here :-).

Now, it might not be the right way to accomplish the specific goal you are trying to achieve, but we didn't know what you had done because we don't have access to your score. So of course we didn't know how to tell you what to change.

As we constantly say here, we really are doing nothing but guessing because we can't see your score. Virtually always when asking for help with MuseScore, attaching your score will allow us to give the 100% accurate answer immediately, rather than all this guessing.

Your first line(you can put anything) really confuses me. As I originally said I 'only' wanted the date on the first page. With the date showing in the footer box when I went to style footers, I was not able to get that to work. This was the whole problem. I could get it on every page or odd pages, but nothing else. So for me, I would disagree, from my experiences. When the date I had entered from new score setup was there things did not work. Yet, when I finally guessed to erase the date from the box the date was only on the first page as I wanted. And no, I did not make any other changes with the checked boxes from the moment before. That was my experience and why I mentioned noone saying anything. I thought I had made it clear what I was trying to do. Sorry I did not. I hope I now know how to do this. I have a lot of movements I need to go back and change. Thanks again

My first line was a direct response to your statement, "Nowhere in the manual does it say 'do not have the date in the footer box'". Of course nowhere in the manual does it give such an incorrect piece of advice! Having the date in the footer box is perfectly acceptable, if having a data in your footer is what you want. Of course the manual isn't able to say, "RLF, given what we know about you personally and your personal wishes, we think it would not be good for you to put the date in the footer on this particular score you are working on".

Once again, if you are having some sort of problem still, attach your score and describe what is going wrong, we can show you exactly how to solve it. Without your score, we can only keep guessing.

If something as simple(should be) as putting in a copyright needs a copy of the score to decipher, then there is a problem with! And since date on first page IS a choice, yea, a comment in the manual would be helpful to NOT have the date showing up in the footers. But yes, apparently I am the only one to have ever had this problem! Sorry to bother.... and Marc these responses are the reason I Hate to bring any issue to the forums and would Never send in a score, even if I could do it easily. I will just continue to guess when it is tooo much trouble to put necessary details in the manual!

To be clear - we don't need to see a score to explain how to add a copyright message. We've already explained exactly how to do it, and the Handbook is also clear on this. This is why I said, if you're still having trouble even after following our instructions and following the Handbook, that's why we'd need to see the score - to understand what you've done incorrectly, and show you how to correct it.

Rather than being a reason to avoid asking questions, it's a reason to celebrate the incredible free resource these forums represent. Not only do you get almost instant replies to questions, but you also get people willing to walk through your particular score with you to show you how exactly to apply the general advice to your specific situation. All for free. Where else does one ever receive that amazing level of service?

OOPS! I lied....in my last post. In part. Last night as I quit I tried what you were saying. I looked at page 1, yes, page 2, no. Great! Just what I wanted. Shut down for the night. After my post to you this morning I started again and as I skimmed past page 3, there was the copyright. Not just on page 1. So, did not work. (Reading is a waste...examples are it!) :)'s Thanks again. Marc has a post with more info that I need to try and figure out.

I just made the correct guess. I enter the date in 'new score' set up. Since it was already in footer window I did not surmise it should 'not' be there. That was the missing piece noone had mentioned yet and I had yet to guess. Thanks to you and all!

Sorry for all the confusion here, I'll try to make a step by step for you.

(Refer to Shoichi's RLFTest.mscz file for confirmation)

Open File->Score Properties from the menu
Enter your copyright information in the copyright field
Close this window.

Choose Format->Style from the menu. Choose the Header/Footer tab on the left.
Make sure "Footer Text" (halfway down the page, above the second group of text fields) is checked.
Under "Footer Text", check "Show on First Page" box.
Uncheck the "Different odd/even pages" box (optional)
In the first "Middle" text field in the "Footer" section, type "$C"
This will auto-insert your copyright text (from the Score Properties window) as a centered footer on the first page only.
Close the Style window.

You should see your copyright text on page 1 only.

Why does "$C" do this? Because it is a built-in specialized 'metatag'.

You can hover your cursor over a text field in the Header/Footer window to see a list of metatags and their function, or just go here to review the full list (scroll down a bit for the list) : https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/score-properties#header-footer

Hope this helps!
