Is tremolo playback broken?

• Oct 15, 2022 - 23:50

Tremolo is supposed to divide the length of the note, right? 2 slashes should divide the note into 4, right? First measure of first pic, it plays 16th notes. Doesn't make any sense but okay...Second measure of first pic it also plays 16th notes, like I expect it to. Okay, so tremolo just plays static 16th notes with 2 diagonal lines? Alright...

But then on pic 2, see what I have to do to get both those notes to play tremolo at the same speed? NOW they aren't absolute 16th tremolos, NOW they are relative to the note length? What gives? Should I give up on expecting musescore to playback tremolo the correct way? Or even consistently?

I think it is consistent.

tremolo as extra beams

half note = no beams + (double tremolo = two beams) -> two beams = sixteens
quarter note = no beams + double tremolo -> sixteens
eight note = 1 beam + (single tremolo = 1 beam) -> two beams = sixteens

I say it would divide a note because that's what it's doing once I hit 8th notes. Whole w/ double trem = sixteenths. Half w/ double trem = sixteens. Quarter w/ double trem = sixteens. Eigth w/ double = 32nds. Sixteenth w/ double trem = sounds like it's going for 64ths

It is not consistent at all what musescore is doing

Look at this file. Play it back. You can hear the tremolo speed up at the 8th and the 16th plain as day

Thank you for your example, you are right Musescore 3 playback would in fact be incorrect if you are writing and reading a score this way.
The way I read a trem is: The number of slashes correspond to the number of beams that the notes would have if written out, similar to this guy plz see file below, then playback is compatible to this way of trem interpretation.
I didn't really pay attention to performance of trem per se so I cannot say which is more popular, but I bet there is no wrong in the world of music, isn't it?
To get to the bottom of it and convince others, do you have a particular score (eg by classical/famous composer) in mind?
