inputting notes on separate staffs

Musescore is automatically copying notes I am inputting in my first staff into my second linked staff - I am actually writing two parts. How do I get musescore to stop inputting on both staffs?

I actually want 2 sop recorders, (playing different lines), but I guess I'll have to try a work-around.

Okay, so adding another recorder on a separate (non-linked) staff is not a "work-around".
See:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/create-new-score#add-staff
especially this part:
"Important: Add a new instrument instead if the new staff you wish to add belongs to a separate instrument."

While it's true that, say in a recorder quartet, the staff for each recorder may be combined into "systems" of 4 staves - i.e., because all 4 play concomitantly - each recorder is a separate instrument.
This differs from a "linked" staff which primarily is used for linked standard/tablature notation where a note entered upon a standard notation staff is automatically transcribed to tablature and displayed on a TAB staff (or vice versa). Your notes were automatically copied because that's what "linked" staves are designed to do.
