Constant recalculation of the page (or pages)

• Mar 25, 2023 - 23:23

MS4 constantly recalculates the page (that is, it seems to me, all pages). If you write very complex material that is full of triplets, pentoles, accents, dynamic marks, textual elements ... it can easily happen that your page keeps jumping when you enter because something is constantly being reformatted. This often happens when entering a triplet, for example, because MS4 doesn't know what the triplet will look like in the end, so entering each note causes the page to jump and reformat. Can the constant and automatic recalculation of the page be turned off? So I type everything in first, then somewhere I click "format page" and see what I got? I think that would significantly speed up the entry.

Maybe I should explain a little. I have a number of instruments arranged in 9 staffs. So it fits on my page twice for those 9 lines, but very tight. That's why I pay attention to every vertical space and adjust them so that it all fits on the page. However, I have to enter all the elements first, and only then can I adjust them individually. So I'd like to turn off page formatting until I'm done typing, then see what's causing my problem and adjust those elements (for example, for a triplet, I can put the triplet sign below or above the note; this is often crucial if I'm saving space).

The quick way round this problem is to reduce the scaling temporarily: (Format > Page settings... > Scaling > Stave space). That will stop your systems overflowing during note entry. After all note entry is complete, you can increase the scaling back to your desired value in order to adjust the stretch/shrink for individual measures.
