MuseScore 4 Soundfonts

• Dec 16, 2022 - 22:12

How do I choose soundfont instruments in MS4? In MS3, this could be done by selecting the soundfont with F12 & then choosing the sound/instrument/voice in the Mixer. With MS4, the option to choose the soundfont was moved to the Mixer, but I don't see the option to change the actual sounds in either the Mixer or the Instruments panel. I have voice names like Music Box, Pipe Organ, String Section, & LD-AcidSQneutral, including a few I named myself in a custom soundfont. Is there any way to select these instruments that I've been missing or do I have to edit everything in Polyphone to be able to use the sounds?

I would like to know this answer too. odconstant, your reply doesn't answer the question.
In MuseScore 3, we could open the soundfont and then pick instrument sounds from that font, like Music Box or Telephone or Bass Pad 3. This option doesn't seem to exist in MuseScore 4, not that I can find. There is no instrument for Music Box so I can't get that sound on my score.

Thanks

The option to select a sound from within a soundfont will be restored in one of the next updates.
As a workaround you could use the free Sforzando or Sfizz VSTs, which in turn allow you to load a soundfont and select a patch within them.

Okay, where do I find soundfonts to download? Sorry, but I don't know how to do this and the only soundfont options I have are horrid (strings sound like someone is sliding from note to note and the volume is faint - I have to bump the playback master volume to the top, but somehow the strings cancel each other out so I get odd volume bursts when similar notes are doubled across two instruments - horrid!)

Thanks, Bob. Did they fix problems with the glissando? I've had problems with the gliss marking disappearing. If I choose it from the palette it doesn't always go visible. It sometimes reappears when I manually enter score text "gliss." - which playback seems to honor (to the extent that it does what it's trained to do - I realize that's a future development). Sometimes when I enter the gliss as score text, the gliss markings I entered from the palette magically appear, but I can't count on them staying visible...haven't figured out what causes them to disappear any more than I know what causes them to appear...oh joy!

Ugh! never mind. It appears to have righted itself. Don't know if it's due to downloading the latest upgrade or what, but the current score seems okay. It was a transfer from MS3, so something got lost in translation. I'll holler if anything similar happens again. Perhaps instead of going with the transferred score I would have fewer problems if I copy the parts into a blank new score?

Thanks, everyone for all your work at incremental (and sometimes huge) improvements, all the while managing the nitpicky details!
