Entering tuplets with "off" note entry mode

• Dec 5, 2014 - 20:54

I wonder about this issue so I prefer to talk initially in this forum.

I do not really know if there is a bug, because the behavior is the same for several months, and also in 1.3. Or maybe it is an oversight, or other thing, for this specific situation.

So I open "My First Score"

I want entering e.g. a triplet (Ctrl + 3): I select the whole rest, or the first measure, but I forget to switch the Note entry mode.

The quarter note, as you can see, is already selected by default in the toolbar: so, the expected result is either there nothing happens, or I have a triplet of three eighth notes.

The actual result is a triplet of half notes (notice that the default value in the toolbar has switched to this half note, while I have not changed anything)

I can of course cancel this result, activate the input mode, and all is well then.

Inside a score, this case can be repeated: I fill a certain measure, I leave note entry mode, I go back to type text e.g. Then I go back to where I was, by selecting the measure and typing Ctrl + 3 without pressing the "N" key.
Result:
in the score exit note entry note.jpg

So, how to treat this? As of thoughtlessness on the part of the user? Or looks like a bug? Thanks.

Seems normal / correct to me.

The toolbar doesn't reflect the duration of the rest becauseyou have selected a *range* (potentially containing multiple notes and rests of different durations) rather than a single note. The toolbar only updates when you select a single note or rest, not when you select a range.

When you select a range (even a range containing only a single note/rest) and then give a command like Ctrl+3 (or most other commands), MuseScore applies that command to each note in the selection. If the measure you select had two half notes in it, it would be the same as if you applied Ctrl+# to each, so you'd end up with two sets of quarter note triplets. But your measure has only a single four-beat rest, you you got a single half note triplet.

Yes, probably not very useful.
I was intrigued by the collision, and also because I confused probably in a distant memory the sign of the diminuendo with the signs of accents, which have another function!

These accents are in the Master Palette (Symbols) and also come into collision with the notes (or letters or numbers in tabs). Well, everything is adjustable, so the question is quite secondary.
