Ah, if the ' is a dead key for you, use d'Ctrl+Spaceune, to prevent getting "dúne" or "dùne"

Ah, that's the trick! Thanks.
Edit: I was to early with my reply. I tried your suggestion but ' CTRL [space] does not insert the apostrophe. However I found out another method which does work. I use the special symbol set from windows to copy paste the apostrophe.
And even easier: copy paste complete text from Word or Notepad.

what type of keyboard, what language and operating system?
I need the Ctrl trick only for accents ´ and ` and not for '

QWERTY keyboard. On my keyboard the single apostrophe is ' (left to the Enter key) and combined with an a it's á.

so it is a dead key, hence the Ctrl+space should have worked? Like for me if I use the accents on my keyboard, (left of the backspace key)

Have you tried to type twice ?
On my keyboard (French BÉPO, Linux Mint 17) typing twice a dead key delivers the symbol of that key

Hi Robert,
typing the apostrophe twice results in 2 apostrophes in a row. But hey, I can use backspace to remove the second and so I get what I want by typing the following sequence:
d''[backspace]une :-)

In all editors (Word, Notepad, Outlook, etc.) the dead keys behave as expected. So they combine with vowels to create diacritics (é, è, ç ...) and combined with a space they stand for themselves (', `," ...). Except in the musescore editor they create only a space when I type an apostrophe followed by CTRL+space.
@ABL: That's the expected behavior which works in all standard editors. The problem is that the editor in Musescore doesn't behave as the standard.

This is not a general MuseScore text edit problem, just in lyrics entry, where Space has the meaning of moving on to the next note. In Staff text for example it would work without the Ctrl

For a typographic apostrophe, [Alt + NumPad 0146] “d’une” without backspacing.
