Staff deletion.

• Nov 17, 2015 - 01:50

Actually, there are two question in one. I noticed in a score that some pages contains 2 systems and others, only one. Why is this?

Thinking that perhaps the two system per page may be too tight, I thought of deleting one staff in the system which is not necessary, so it will be plenty of room for two system per page. How can I delete a staff? The search in the handbook is of no help

To completely delete a staff - removing it from all systems - go to Edit / Instruments, select the staff, and press the Remove button. If you just mean, do not show the staff in systems where it does not contains notes, then Style / General / Hide empty staves.

As for why different oages fit different number of systems, there are lots of possibilities, we'd need you to attach your score in order for us to do more than just guess. Some possibilities: a title or other frame on some page makes less room available for music, lyrics or fret diagrams require more space on systems, use of staff spacers might be requiring extra space, use of "Hide empty staves" might be making the systems have different sizes, etc.

Thanks for your advise on how to remove a staff. It was not evident to me, since the deletion come after you get out of the dialog box.

Anyway, that did cure the problem of pages with only one system. After deleting the staff I noticed that it was plenty of room to accommodate the two systems per page but it did not happened. There are many pages with only one system and I don't think it is for lack of space. I truly appreciate your help.

The pages that appear to have enough room for another system will not take another because there is a page break at the end of the last system. In other words, you (or someone else) *asked* MuseScore not to place another system on the page. Remove the page breaks and the pages fill as expected. Although the placement of the line breaks seems bad; I'm guessing they were placed either in a different program with different lsyout rules, or perhaps they were placed before the notes were entered or before the page size or staff size was decided upon. Really, you should probably remove all breaks (eg, via Edit / Tools / Add/Remove Line Breaks) and then decide where you might need to add explicit ones.

I attached the file with some personal arrangements.

Marc, I want to know if it is possible to change the distance between the Bass staff and the Continuo (Piano) staff, only. I tried to do this with the style menu, but I only got more distance between all the staves, which it isn't what I want.

It is intended to avoid the collision of the bass lyrics with some rhythm figures in the instrumental staff.

Can we? How?

Well, it already exists to some extent - set an appropriate lyrics bottom margin in Style / General / Page. But you'll see it will affect all staves that have lyrics, not just this one, and it will add the same amount of space regardless of whether the staff below has notes or other markings extending above it or not. While it's technically possibly to automatically add space, it's actually not always *correct* to do so - as often as not it's better to move lyrics up, or move the amrking above the lower staff closer in, or make other adjustments. So while some day MuseScore might do some more of that sort of automatic adjustment, I suspect that you'd still spend a fair amount of time disagreeing with the decision it makes and wanting to override them.
