Playback speed drifts faster and slower
I converted a midi file which generated 5 clefs.
In order to play along, I added a 4 measure
lead-in for one of the instruments to set the tempo.
The lead-in plays faster than the rest of the song. As soon
as it hits all the instruments (even if they are muted) the
tempo slows.
To duplicate, open the attachment, and mute all instruments
except for the 3rd clef (it has the lead in), then start playback.

You will need to add a tempo to the first measure: select it, then go to Create > Text > Tempo, then make the tempo you were using before.

I don't see where the original tempo was ever set. I have no idea how the system decided to use the tempo it did.
If I leave the Play Panel open, it doesn't change from 120 bpm to something slower after the lead-in.
I notice that different demo files playback at different tempos (what bpm established as 100%), but
I don't see the number appear anywhere on the sheet. For example, if I select the Brandenburg Concerto,
the "Play panel" shows 90 bpm as 100%. Where did that come from?
If I open Planxty Carolan from the demo directory, the tempo word it shows is "Allegro", When you open the Play Panel it
shows 120 bpm. But if you open the Create>Text>Tempo and select Allegro, it shows 132, not 120, I don't understand where the 120 bpm is stored.

Hmm, that's interesting. If you don't know what tempo the rest of the piece is, then you will also need to create a tempo at the point where the tempo changes, since there is no tempo text to select and delete.

It's my guess that there is a tempo text there whcih is a null string.
I have put these on a score myself, and regretted i because you can't then select it to change the tempo

I've noticed that if you create a new tempo at the same place as the "null tempo", the new one overrides the old one.

If the score had been created from within MuseScore, then a null tempo string would be the natural assumption. But since it came from a MIDI import, I'm guessing the MIDI file itself contained an indication of tempo that MuseScore is honoring. When you add measures *before* the beginning of the piece, MuseScore probably just goes back to its default of 120. I think it might work better to add the measures after the first bar, then copy the contents of the first bar afterwards. Or just edit the MIDI file directly to add four bars of silence first, then you could place your intro there.

@Marc Thanks. I put the .mid file into Anvil Studio (freeware version). I added 4 measures at the beginning. Saving in Anvil Studio set the tempo at one rate from the beginning. When imported, the new file does not change speeds in MuseScore, and Play Panel shows the bpm that I set in Anvil as the 100% setting.
That program also fixed some other oddities in the original file (time signature of first measure was different than rest of piece).

It's always as well to check a MIDI file in a sequencer before importing into MuseScore.
Otherwise there's no way of ensuring there aren't complcations in it.
